For whatever itís worthÖhave been working through the TMEA online audition system the last 2-3 weeks with the Region Jazz auditions. After being initially skeptical, I am really pleased with how the recordings came out for our band members. While judging, I also thought the recordings of students from other schools came through really clearly and were representative of the kids as best as possible.
For the kids to record - it was easy for them to login and easy to re-record when they wanted to. Some of our kids did their recordings using a computer/microphone setup in a practice room or band hall - others did theirs at home.
The judging process was not unlike normal, keeping your own spreadsheet, listening through each round, and then entering your scores into the system.
It takes a little bit to navigate accessing the recordings - but once youíve figured it out, itís not challenging to playback through each student. I realize there are still going to be some kinks, but the process went better than what I think I was expecting.
I realize the concerns about authenticity - kids recording for other kids - Hoping that students participating will respect the process enough not to do that. And not really worried about judges not listening all the way through recordings - I know there are always outliers, but most who agree to judge are going to do right by the students who have put energy into the process. Directors can also help the process by not verifying kids/submitting recordings that are not complete or of good quality during the verification period.
I canít imagine the time or logistics on the TMEA end to make this all work and think itís a great option for our band members to give them another thing to work towards during this time.
