Re: Teaching Saxophone (second year teacher)
I am not sure if you have a class of two, or two saxophones mixed in a class with other instruments. Maybe you can start teaching some of the major scales. As they get proficient, they can do start doing two octave scales. The normal range on saxophone is Bb below the staff to High F above the staff. Not really possible to play below Bb, except for some Bari Saxes. For most middle school students(and some high schoolers), low D to D above the staff will be the most played range. Even though it is possible for saxophones to play above high F, this is nothing to worry about in middle school, and not really in high school either. Only very advanced players worry about going above High F, and it is extremely rare to see band music written above High F. (listen to Lenny Pickett on Saturday Night Live to hear a master of the saxophone altissimo). Notes above High D are relatively easy on saxophone, below low D are a little more difficult. I would at least have players know the fingers for the lower notes (down to low Bb) before leaving middler school.
Hope this helps!
