The way our schedule for kids works is they have athletic practices 4pm-6pm or so. (may deviate by 15 minutes start time if they're trying to get them to tutoring) Our cheer squad has been doing 6-7/7:30pm. We rehearse Monday and Thursday 6:30pm-8:30pm, and Wednesday 4-5:30pm. We know we'll miss JV football on Thursdays, and we'll miss athletics kids on Wednesdays. Mondays we get everyone by the end of the rehearsal. Generally speaking we start the season with going outside in class on days we don't have rehearsal. (Not so much this year as we try and catch up to where we should be/safety concerns by being outside more this year) Wednesdays since I have the kids who aren't in a sport, we tend to normally do more conditioning and workout stuff based on the Marching Health 15 Minute Workout (Highly recommend them!). We then work with who we have there.
If we did right after school every day we would never have the full band there, so this works as kind of a compromise to make things work as best as we can without being there until 10pm every night. I think one of the keys to success with small schools is always rehearsing the band in front of you and not dwelling on the kids that are missing. My cheerleaders usually catch up pretty quickly on things they miss because they tend to be better at marching due to dance training they may have had growing up.
I get the coach ratio, we have two directors to like eleven coaches for the team on Friday nights... but that's a different argument that none of us are ever going to win in the small schools especially!
