Remember - marching band is one of the the most visible parts of what we do. It may not be your favorite part - but it is critical to generating support for music education and a big part of why band is Texas receives the support it does. Growing up in a state where football wasn’t King, support for band was a lot harder to come by.
Could we do without large scale props, electronics, synths? IMO those decisions are always worth examining... but micromanaging? I think it’s a slippery slope.
Marching band is a wonderful activity that serves our students and energizes our community. It may look different after COVID, but “drastically reducing it” could end up “drastically reducing” your job.
If you think teaching marching band isn’t teaching music... or isn’t quality music education, it might be worthwhile to re-examine how you are teaching it.
Have a great week - stay healthy. We have our first football game this week. It’s away - and we are pumped!
