Re: Instructor playing in the stands?
It is pretty common in small schools, especially those with smaller bands. I always have. Usually I'm either playing trumpet or trombone, sometimes snare or tenors depending on where in the grading cycle the football game lands. The kids like it, the crowds like it, the admins see me having fun with the kids and keeping them motivated. Playing pep band stuff is probably my favorite part of teaching band altogether. If not for UIL, I'd probably have a show band that just plays fun and current pieces that get the crowds excited. That's really what bands are there for during football games in the first place, and it's probably our best recruiting tool among the young kids running around the stands. And playing along with the kids looks a lot better to everyone around than leaning over the rails looking like I can't wait for this to be over.
