Re: Frustrated with virtual aspect of teaching
I haven't even started beginners on instrument, and we've been "in" school since Aug 17. But, I've also only seen each beginner class a total of 10 times so far. That is only two weeks in a normal year. I haven't placed kids on instruments yet because I've only "seen" about half of them. The other half are either asynchronous or are synchronous but keep their camera off and don't respond when we call on them so they probably aren't actually there. I'v been teaching 23 years and this is the toughest year I have ever had. PERIOD, and I've had some tough years (my first week of my first year would have made some people change their careers). We started kids in-person this week, with half on one day and half on the other, but kids still have the option to remain remote. Most of our band kids have stayed remote. I only had 15 beginners coming in-person between the two days. I keep telling myself that while this is the fourth week of school, we are only really beginning the third week and that this year is a different year, but at the same time I can't help but to look down the road at how this will impact the next two or three years. It makes me almost want to teach a core class...almost.
