A lot of this depends on the situation. Are you an assistant with a very demanding HD, or are you a one person show trying to keep up? I used to spend tons of time on planning in my first few years. What I realized is that I was working very slowly in MS Office. I actively learned shortcuts, and made an effort to work like my hair was on fire when planning and cut the time by MORE than 50%. I now try very hard not to waste time at work. That means I leave twice a week by 15 minutes after school/rehearsal. Has really helped.
On the other hand, if youíve thought for years that you chose the wrong career, you should look at alternatives. In todayís climate I wouldnít quit without a plan in place. Ive always thought if I were going to change careers Iíd want to start in June and get double paychecks for a couple months, but you know yourself better than we do.
