I agree that anyone getting into band directing for the money is delusional, but we are both old enough to remember that teachers having summer jobs was a regular occurrence. And it was worse when I was still in HS (70s). I can remember that the coaches had a summer house painting business, and the physics teacher drove an ice cream truck. A big bump for teachers came during that time when a story came out pointing out that most teachers were below the poverty line.
While not spectacular, teacher salaries are significantly above where they used to be, and a two teacher family can easily be in the neighborhood of 'rich' according to the government. Beginner teacher salaries in particular have risen much faster than the top end of the scale. We definitely get a 'fair and living wage'. There are many communities in this state where the highest paid people in the community are the teachers.
Don't get me wrong - there are TONS of issues in education right now, but teacher pay is way down the list.
