Re: Parent pushing for her kid to be in the top band
When you talk to the parent, come across as looking out for the best interest of the student, not your band program. The parent doesn't care about "your" band program (well it's actually the kids program). This parent probably doesn't care anything about all of the rest of the students in the band program. If his grades put him in the bottom band, then let the parent know you were trying to help the student by putting him in the 2nd band so it wouldn't look like a demotion. If you were to put the student in the top band, he would be in over his head and would not be successful. You don't want to put any student in a position to be a failure. He simply wouldn't be able to keep up.
