Re: Parent pushing for her kid to be in the top band
I would absolutely fight this. Don't let the parent railroad you. I hope you have some documentation (perhaps grades from last year, or audition scores?) that he didn't do well in 2nd band. This SHOULD be as easy as "your student placed x out of y students on the audition, placing them in z band" or "your student had an overall average of 75 last year, showing they are not ready for top band." If you let the parent push the kid into the top band for any reason other than EARNING it, others will attempt to do the same.
Just don't let her drag other students into it. If she starts to say "he plays better than Billy" or "Johnny is in top band and...." then you have to cut it off and redirect back to her kid's performance (or lack thereof).
I hope your administration will back you up on this.
