Re: No more than 60 minutes in class?
In bold are the words "extracurricular portion of the music activity." I would be willing to bet that most programs, including yours, rarely spend 60 minutes in a rehearsal, or even 300 minutes in a week in your daily class period working on contest music. I'll bet you have a daily drill, skill-building or sight reading exercises, maybe some chair tests, scale or technique playoffs, tuning, announcements, etc. that occupy much of your rehearsal period, even on block schedule. But since you are on block schedule, just take time to consider in your planning.
When I taught I also got caught up in thinking that basically everything is preparation for a contest performance, but it's not. What you are doing is preparing kids to give a great performance all the time. In fact,when you think about it, that's what contest is for too.
