I agree it is a bad idea to have instruments in their possession with no in person instruction. Had an incoming beginner sax player that spent the entire summer 'playing' his big sister's sax. No one practices as much as a beginner that doesn't know what they are doing. By the time we got started that fall, he was an absolute mess. Spent the entire fall trying to undo the damage, and finally said, "Let's try something. This is a trombone." Did great.
A legendary director in a legendary program once told me that they did not let beginners take their horns home for the first six weeks. They wanted to be monitoring every time the horn met their face and every sound they made for that first period of learning.
I'll admit - I have no clue as to what to do with this year (and I am retired - whew!) but I would be very wary of letting kids have instruments if they are online only.
