[ Post a Response | The Yellow Board ]
Re: UIL Released Message
Every year the board gets filled with posts griping about directors who don't screen their kids ahead of time, clogging up the rooms with kids who didn't prepare and end up wasting our time. I'm not one of those guys you're complaining about. We run regular all-region sectionals and I myself screen every kid before entries are due (6A with about 75 entries every year). If you can't hack it you don't go, period. When you know the cut should only take about a minute and it takes that long for the kid to make it though the first 8 measures why torture yourself for another 2 minutes when you know the kid doesn't even deserve 5 out of 100 points? You are not a top notch educator if you are forcing kids like this to audition just so you can set your chair order for the spring semester. I've been around long enough to know the difference between performance anxiety and a kid who is sight-reading the excerpt, live or on a recording. Every kid has a first audition at some point. They still should at least sound like they have the smallest clue how to play the music and if they don't that's on their director. That is what is unacceptable!
