My district has been waffling, surveying parents, and generally not deciding anything. There are rumors that our county may mirror Dallas, Austin etc. My admin says they expect we will be online for at least some of the fall.
I missed my opportunity to place kids on instruments in the spring. I've presented several ideas for doing that this fall, but nobody is willing to sign off on it. I have no idea how they're going to schedule band classes, or even if I'll have class at all.
I'm considering starting all beginners on recorders. They're cheap. Can be sanitized easily. Kids have no excuse for not carrying them back and forth. They fit in a backpack and on a bus. They're a little annoying, but not so loud that the kids can't practice at home, even in an apartment or if parents are working from home. I can teach everyone the same thing, whether we're at home or in person. At whatever point we're allowed to have more regular band class, even if that's next fall, they already understand how to read music and translate to fingers and air. At that point I'll already know the kids and can better place them on instruments.
Am I crazy?
