Iím in a place where Iím beginning to notice that it is very common to place a 1st-3rd year band director in a head middle school director position. Thereís been many instances (Like 3-4 if you want to be specific) where a first year teacher gets the head MS gig, receives very little (if any) help from their coworkers/mentors, crashes and burns, and seeks to leave the district first chance theyíre able to.
This canít be normal right? Does this happen anywhere else or am I just stuck in one of the shadowlands of the state where band director dreams come to die?
Has anyone ever had this happen and had the director come out successful? What steps did you take to make that happen? Itís beginning to feel like our leadership doesnít care about young band directors and helping nurture their growth as educators.
