Re: Job offer advice
Are you tied to that area or do you just want to teach there? You should never be too picky as a first-year teacher. I'm not advocating against looking for a job where you really want to be, but there are a lot who go jobless their first year out of college because they are afraid to take a job in an area (or situation) that is not their first choice or that might cause them to leave their comfort zone. Twenty-two years ago I graduated in August (I had some non-music or ed classes to finish up). There were no job prospects in my area. I ended up going clear across the state. Meanwhile, I left my fiance behind while she was finishing up her student teaching with the wedding coming up. It was tough but we got married, and she was fortunate to find a teaching job not too far from me in January. It was tough, but 22-years later everything worked out just fine.
Take a chance and look for something outside of your preferred area. There are plenty of "out of the way" schools that need good band directors. Take a chance.
