Re: Teaching with a performance degree in Texas
I did this as a Texas percussionist, BM and MM in performance. I had to become certified through an alternative education program, which I completed in two years with "Region 10 ESC" in North Dallas. My experience was expensive and laborious, but I feel that some of it was useful. Mostly, however, it was a requirement to earn a Music EC-12 certification. I was able to enter into the program at the same time that I accepted a full-time position, making the expense affordable. I put two years into my current school district as a paraprofessional (half-time salary of 20k) prior to acceptance into the program and full-time position at the same district. I have been offered other positions and no one bats an eye anymore that my degrees are in performance.
