Re: How does one...
The question you posed was "How does one deal with.......?" My answer would be do what is easiest for the student right now and do what your admin is asking you to do. With the outbreak of Covid19, everything has changed. Your traditional way of thinking has merit and value....under normal circumstances. However, this isn't a normal circumstance. Now, I don't know your socio-economic situation for your kids or the living life style (rural etc) for your students. I do know that some kids may not have access to the same resources (internet, computer, etc). Even if you think lil' Johnny has to have internet, it's better to not assume that lil' Johnny has the best living situation at home. Maybe Dad and Mom just lost their jobs due to this pandemic. Now there's no more internet. Maybe lil' Johnny's safety net was being away from home and attending school because Dad would come home drunk and beat on him. I know these situations seem outlandish, but it's important to know that our students are dealing with issues that are bigger than just deciding whether or not to show up for a zoom meeting to get a grade. The best we can do as educators right now, is to make life easier for all of our kids going through this. Do what is right for the pandemic we are going through. It's ok to relax on the normalcy of what used to be. No one is testing/judging your integrity.
