I just finished my first year teaching elementary after four years in band. I miss band so much and eventually see myself returning there. However, I don't want to move now. I have finally found a school I love and fit well at. I love my principal and probably more importantly, my principal loves me. I was a good band director and enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed band way more than I do elementary music. I just had not found a good fit. Who you work with matters more than I had realized.
Anyways, my question is, how long do you think I can stay at the elementary level before ruining my chances of returning to band? I especially do not want to move due to current events (COVID). I think it is my best interest to stay where I am currently. I feel the experience I am gaining as an elementary music teacher is going to make me a better band director and ideally I would like to stay at this position for a little while. On the other hand, I do not want to become pegged as an elementary teacher and ruin my chances of getting back into the band world.
Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance!
