Re: Has anyone played for graduation?
It's about exposure. Graduation is the largest attended event the concert band will every year. For some bands, it is the largest audience the band will play in front of all year (including football games). I hated playing at graduations when I did HS, but I also knew it put the band in front of a large crowd and gave exposure to those who might not see the band. Good exposure is never a bad thing. We always played a few chamber style pieces (MS level)before the ceremony. Some were just WW, some just brass, other everyone so the kids weren't playing all the time. The P&C, then school song, fight song, then a few peppier pieces as people were walking out. None of the pieces were above a middle school level so we could play a lot and do them well.
