I myself have a cleft palate and lip. I play percussion. Through college and now, playing wind instruments has always been difficult for me. Every person with cleft pallet and cleft lip are different. Mine for example, when repaired left me with little to no upper lip muscle, so its hard for me to get a good embouchure on clarinet and sax. My low brass embouchure is not correct, but I can get it decent enough to play and keep up with most of my high school kiddos.
Have the student try different mouthpieces for each instrument like you do with every other student and find the best instrument that the student wants to play and will be successful at. Cleft pallet and lip students will have a little more difficulty playing wind instruments, but with hard work, they can make it work. Best of luck.
