As of 5/2/20 there have been 6,843 covid-19 related deaths of kids 15-24 years of age in the US.
This isn't over. We are just getting started.
this is so much bigger than just marching.
Since the statistics and research overwhelmingly shows that children have very little chance of serious complications, especially death, the students are actually very not at risk. There will be several incidents this year with marching band students and they won't be corona related. Kids will get hurt. Some severely probably due to heat and the fact that they will have spent the last 4 months inside doing nothing, (does this mean there should be no DCI, no college, no hs marching band?). That doesn't mean it isn't sad. Kids will die on the football field, (probably a kid that passed a physical but they missed an enlarged heart because those aren't found until someone dies most of the time). Kids will die of cancer and obesity and abuse and suicide. Kids will shoot each other and stab each other in a turf war or gang war or over drugs or a girl or a pair of shoes. All of those are sad and I wish we could stop death but we can't. We can't hide from everything. Well, you can try, but I won't.
Since you asked about my children I will tell you my child hasn't stopped working since this started. I certainly don't want anything to happen to my child or any others. Wash your hands and understand this isn't some magic death curse that you get because you went outside. All children are valuable. And sadly, more children will die this year from everything except Covid. Car wrecks for kids that think they are invincible will be a monthly occurrence. Yet we hand them keys and wish them well because the majority of them will be responsible.
I know this may sound callous but it isn't. Life happens. All you can do is live the best life you can with the time you have because tomorrow is never promised. I could scare myself into total paralysis if I focused on all the negative in the world. But I choose a different route. So let's realize there is more to health than just physical health. More holistic thinking..... Like there's more to band than marching band. There are lots of different components that go into a healthy music program......
There is some truth to what you say, I'll give you that. However, seems like you are ok with a few dead students as long as you can keep on marching! This is really sad. I would ask you, now that you have expressed the 'value' of your/a band program, what is the value of one child's life? Lets make it a little more personal. The loss of one of YOUR child's life - YOUR child, not a band student or just a child in general!
Please tell us.
