Re: Band camp conflicts
With everything that is going on related to Covid-19 and the economy, band directors should be a little more reasonable.
I don't teach anymore, but summer band and the fall marching season will probably be different than previous years. I know I would be reducing the difficulty of my drill and music just in case there are a lot of interruptions. No reasons to add additional stress and worry in a stressed saturated environment.
Do active band directors anticipate summer band and the marching season to be business as usual?
Every year, we deal with our share of kids missing summer band. However, I think it's important to be extremely reasonable about this year. As others have said, this COVID-19 situation has had an effect on everybody. Stress levels are high all around, and it's going to be important that we are understanding and compassionate about our response to things like this. This parent has contacted you pretty well in advance, which means they know that a conflict exists. It's very possible that their vacation got bumped back, or they had to put something together after their original plans were cancelled. Working schedules or trying to make ends meet may be a factor in this. My biggest recommendation is that you keep this in mind. The kids can't really control any of this sort of thing.
