Re: More kids quitting than usual
I would expect that. The kids are home and bored. For many, many students the draw to band is more than the music or the instrument or the director. The draw to band is their friends. The band family. And that has been ripped away and no matter how many zoom meetings or Smartmusic assignments you give you can't replace that. So kids are bored and missing the real reason they are there. I would expect the numbers to drop. Plus, kids have had a chance to explore other things and interests during this time or to realize they just aren't missing it. The challenge is to hang on to the ones you have as best you can and don't take it personally for the ones that leave.
And maybe some of us would do well to remember that while kids want to be part of a good program making quality music what they really want is to be part of an organization with their friends.
Just my opinion.
Just wanted to know if anyone else have received an unexpected amount of emails from kids that say they’re not continuing with band...just of out of the blue. Disclaimer: these are great kids and we have a history of great retention and providing really positive experiences
Kids don’t mention anything about the current situation in their email but I feel guilty for not handling the past month correctly (too much/not enough communication, assignments, etc) and somehow causing this to happen
