I agree with this. However I am of the mindset that there is always the possibility that the head director might make an exception and interview someone who's resume is still strong even though they play in the same instrument group as the HBD. It has happened to me several times, and I've also been offered the position anyway a couple of times. And on the other side of the coin, a few years ago I had an ABD position to fill. Since I'm a brass player, I was interested in finding a woodwind player. I interviewed seven people, six winds, one brass. The one brass player came in and just nailed the interview, and their references were all really good. I hired the brass player, and it was the right call...a good hire all around.
If you're wondering weather or not to apply anyway, consider this:
1. You have just as much a right to apply for any open job as the next person does.
2. Whenever you apply for any job, there is always the chance you don't get an interview. However, if you don't apply at all, I can *guarantee* that you won't get an interview.
