My wife is very adamant about NOT seeing her kids out in the community. She dreads the impromptu parent conferences in the grocery store, or worrying about a kid seeing her with a margarita at the restaurant. She drives 30+ minutes to work, but it's worth it to her.
Something to consider - there's a big difference between a freeway commute and a country commute. I had a job for a while that was an hour from home, but it was 90% country back roads. It was calm and relaxing. Sometimes too relaxing after a long day. Another gig I had to get from one side of a major city to another. I could take the loop around and have a regular 45 minute drive, or go straight through and take the chance that it would be 30 minutes in good traffic or who knew how long if there was a wreck. Rush hour traffic was not fun. I walked into school already stressed out. Not the best way to start the day.
