I agree with just about everything you said. If the only thing we can figure out to “motivate” our students to learn new skills is a grade, then what do you do when they call your bluff and say “okay, I don’t care about failing”? I think you have to approach this from multiple angles, but the students have to understand that participation is required (there must be consequences for refusing to play/participate). They don’t have to, but they get to.
