Disclaimer: I realize not EVERYWHERE in Texas does this. I teach now in an upper-middle-class suburb with very high expectations of teachers and students.
Only in Texas do people require 6th graders to get wood clarinets - eg E11 with an expensive upgraded mouthpiece. Buffet, Jupiter, Selmer, Yamaha all make synthetic resin clarinets that play very well, especially for 6th graders.
Yamaha saxophones - they're really expensive. Yes, they're great, but pricey. 6th graders can do just fine on Jupiter, Selmer, Cannonball, Mauriat horns that cost far less.
And seriously, trigger trombones? For 12 year olds?
