TSSEC - Again, I can see it being cancelled this year (if not by UIL but by the host sites. If there is no lace to have it, you can't have it). But, it will come back next year.
June band/early July band - that should be canceled anyways. Give the kids a break. Band is our life, not theirs. July band - well I can see some late July stuff possibly being canceled this year, but that is likely to be a local decision based upon the outbreak in that area. Middle of no where west Texas is different than DFW or Houston. But, next year everything will be back to normal.
Massive band fees - I've never understood that anyways. We (well, not me) charge more to be a part of a school activity than any other activity. It's insane. These parents (for the most part) are already having to pay for an expensive instrument and now you have to pay hundreds - even thousands - of dollars to be a part of a school activity that already gets a budget and has a booster organization that fundraises?
Expensive University and Leadership camps - Yes, these will (and should) be canceled. Though, I got an email from one stating it was still going on and there would be refunds given out if it is canceled.
Super expensive top shelf beginner horns - I've never understood this either. Sure, we don't want junk that is going to fall apart after a few months, but there are some good beginner horns that a relatively inexpensive. Plus, I wouldn't want my kid playing on an expensive instrument at first. Have you seen their cellphone screens? I've seen less cracks at a plumber's convention.
I've always been an "old school" director with modern tendencies, but some of the things band directors do these days to "keep up with the Jones'" boggles my mind. The problem is that it won't stop. It is like the hoarding issue we have at grocery stores. People keep complaining about how people are hoarding and they wish they would just buy what they need for right now (like their normal shopping habits). But, at the same time those complaining have to get more than they need because there might not be anything left the next time. Directors complain about other directors who go overboard but they know they have to do the same to compete (which band - and music in general - should NOT be a competition). I doubt anything will change because of the current situation we are in.
