Remember back in college to the original Maslow's Needs? For many families the bottom tier of needs of housing, food, etc. aren't being met on a normal basis... Now that people are furloughed, laid off, jobs gone, etc. that one isn't happening. In the case of those that do have jobs the second tier of Safety... Can we say any of us are feeling particularly 'Safe' right now? Let alone a kid who has had their entire world upended? Even with an adult perspective this is an insane time!
I probably have a couple dozen kids that don't have their instruments... nothing I can do at this point for them. I tried one night of an instrument pickup and got most of the others out that didn't pick them up when I warned them before spring break. I did warn kids before spring break too, so most of them took them home. I'm probably more worried about collecting instruments from seniors when everything is called off...
As far as kids learning... well we'll do what we can on this distance model. Like always there will be some kids that care more and we'll get them ahead of the others. Some won't do anything and it'll be backwards in growth. Come August when we get them back we'll figure it out.
Right now I think the least of our worries should be overloading kids with assignments and such. I'm giving kids about two assignments on SmartMusic per week, recording themselves if they don't have internet/device access, or a packet of worksheets for minimum requirements for the others. We can't really do anything else at this point...
I give it until the week before Easter at most before we're all done.
