I have given the double reed students handouts with detailed info on reeds, why they're important, why they're expensive, brands, prices, places to order them from, strengths, etc. We even have reeds for them to purchase.
She comes in with 5 brand new reeds. I was excited for her until I looked at them up close. they had no brand name or sizing info anywhere (reed, cork, or tube). They have wire bailing (like a bassoon reed) plastic wrap over the threading and unfinished portion of the reed under the bailing.
Speaking of unfinished portions, there are no windows or backings that were scraped into the cane. It looks like a tip and maybe a heart. the rest of the reed was untouched.
The cane seems soft and not like typical arundo donax cane.
I played one and it was aweful. The student sounded no better on this brand new reed than she did on her old split reed.
I looked up the reeds online and found lots of these exact reeds with no consistent branding. They were priced aroun $8 for 2 reeds.
My question for any double reed folks: I have some limited still in scraping reeds. I have all the tools to do so and I've done lots of touch ups. Should I bother trying too "finish" these "reeds"?
