Re: What are your best strategies to get kids to use more air?
All things being good otherwise (reed, horn, embouchure, etc.)...
Have them play below the staff E (all fingers and both pinkies down) until they get to a volume where it feels like it'll rattle their teeth loose.
Then tell them to use that kind of air all the time.
It may take a few tries, but they should get the idea eventually.
We have some shy kids in the clarinet section that don’t project past pianissimo.
