Re: Year off from band, want to get back in somehow
I got the job as band director where I'm at by first working there as a math teacher. When the previous director left the principal offered it to me because had seen how I handle the students. There was an assistant director already in place but I was the first choice as the director because of my ability to handle students.
You have the certification, but is that enough? Wouldn't districts be looking for a matching degree? I'm genuinely asking, because I really have no idea how it works. In my mind, seeing someone with a music degree and a math certification would be kind of a weird situation for a hiring district.
I have a certification in 4-8 math and Special education. All I had to do was pass the test in order to receive the certification. There is always openings for math teachers and special ed. I got them for a back up plan.
So the summer of 2019 I got sick and didn't manage to land a job before school started. I have five years' experience teaching band, and I want to get back into it, but I can't help but feel like it's a waste of time putting in applications when they're just going to be ignored due to me not being in band directing for an entire school year. So I guess I have a few questions.
If I wanted to teach another subject, how many steps am I away from teaching, say, elementary music? Or math/english/core subjects in general? Is it just a certification exam? Or is there something I'm missing?
