Re: Year off from band, want to get back in somehow
I took three years off from teaching and worked as a field technician for a tech company. The pay was decent but I missed the kids and went back to the classroom. I applied at a school that was a one man gig and built them up from 4s-3s to 2s-1s. When kids in a struggling program buy in and see success, it's the best part of teaching. Those situations of rebuilding can be the most rewarding of you have the administrative support.
The best advice I can give is to network with directors. Get involved with teaching again to build up more credibility and references.
Best wishes and keep your head up.
So the summer of 2019 I got sick and didn't manage to land a job before school started. I have five years' experience teaching band, and I want to get back into it, but I can't help but feel like it's a waste of time putting in applications when they're just going to be ignored due to me not being in band directing for an entire school year. So I guess I have a few questions.
If I wanted to teach another subject, how many steps am I away from teaching, say, elementary music? Or math/english/core subjects in general? Is it just a certification exam? Or is there something I'm missing?
