Re: Placed that always are looking for new directors
It is a nice place to be in mentally. I will admit that I am not far from being able to retire. However, I've had that mindset since I was a young teacher. I refuse to be jerked around by incompetent administrators. It is just not worth it. I can always find something outside of this field to make a living and it wouldn't take me long...
What a nice dream, to be able to just "hand in the keys" and walk away instead of, y'know, needing to actually earn money so you can pay for rent.
I agree with you 100%! Those would pretty much be my answers now. Nobody has to put up with this. Never be afraid to hand in your keys...
And this is why some schools can't get or keep good band directors. Sorry this happened to you. I've been through similar experiences at times in my career. Now that I'm a retire/rehire I'm left alone and allowed to teach. If any of this happened to me now, here's how I would respond.
1. I had a budget, but was never allowed to see it so I could plan accordingly. Was always told, "Just do POs until I tell you to stop." When I stressed that it was important for me to see what money I had to work with, I was told, "You're NOT GOING TO SEE THE BUDGET. Unless you want to be written up for insubordination, I suggest you stop asking for it."
No, you won't write me up for anything. Here's the keys, go jump in the lake. By the way, good luck with the first game on Friday.
2. I was required to take them to UIL (1C MS by myself...long story). When it came time to do the PO for the entry, I was told, "You're out of money. You are going to have to pay for the entry fee out of your own pocket. No...you ARE taking the band to UIL."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, right! See if that happens! I'm done! YOU take them to UIL. Bye!
3. Administration became completely unhinged in a BAD way that the band got a 122/222 at UIL. Did I mention that this was the first time in 12 years they DIDN'T get 555/555?
Oh I'm so sorry. I thought that you wanted the band to get better. I thought you wanted the kids to be proud of themselves. Tell you what, I'll leave now and that will give you a chance to hire a poor director so that you can go back to your 5's.
4. The only decent thing the principal did was tell me this:, "You need to resign." I asked why, and he said, "You went over budget and your UIL ratings were low."
Okay, here's the keys. What's that? No, I won't finish out the rest of the year. You said, you didn't want me here. So, I'm leaving. Get a sub or do it yourself. Bye!
And they wonder why TEA is now in control of the district.
Well, that's the fault of the community. The community elects the school board who oversees the district. The community allowed the school board to do nothing and keep incompetent, corrupt administrators in place.
I've read a lot of your posts. You seem to have a lot on the ball. I hope that you never have another experience like this again. Best wishes to you for the rest of the year!
