Re: Developing ears
This isn't the complete answer but one thing that I do is ask a lot of questions. We play 8-16 measures and then ask questions about what they heard. When students start saying "I heard Johnny play a wrong note" or "I heard the saxes out of tune" then they are more likely to fix it the next time.
Another thing, I have a sign on the board that says "If you miss it, mark it" that I talk about at least once EVERY class period.
