One "con" would be that, if the district chooses this option, school will start earlier in August. This will put a crimp on your summer band schedule as it moves all the in-service crap earlier in the month. I put "con" in quotes because DoIs that choose this option end up starting school on or around August 15...which was when everyone
was starting school before the state put in the law making school start on the 4th week of August (about 10 years ago IIRC). I was HD at a school that took that route when they got DoI status, and it wiped out a week of summer band. It would have helped if we were told that they were going to start school early...nobody found out until TBA. If you already know the school is getting DoI status, you can start to plan ahead. You would do well to come up with two summer band schedules so that when you know for sure when your start date is, you can announce the appropriate schedule.
If you remember what your summer band schedule was from that far back, you should be able to re-implement it with only some minor tweaking, thereby making things not so much of an issue.
Other than that, I didn't experience any problems working in DoI districts. It was put in place, and worked very smoothly. Just understand that the district is given a "menu" where they can choose three options to implement. I've worked in two DoI schools, and both of them chose the same three options. Make sure you know what options are available, ask questions so you know exactly what those options allow the district to do
, and figure out how they impact your program (if at all). There was no negative impact on my program at all, save for the quick reworking of the summer band schedule that first year.
How many of you have done research on Districts of Innovation, what are the pros and the cons?
