I'd follow up by saying there are a lot of great head directors out there (mine included!).
Don't let one (or a handful) stop you from a career you might enjoy.
My buddy says the head just teaches the honor band. All other classes are covered by the lower directors. Supposedly, he is mostly in the his office everyday.
And the pay difference is estimated but not incorrect. The head gets extra summer days like a coach and two or three stipends he said.
I understand band is difficult. I've been around band all my life and college. But considering that this is the norm...I think I will make a wise choice not to teach public school. Being a head is not what I necessarily hope for. I just want a career that is fair and I'm passionate about.
And I'm not afraid to work by all means, I'm afraid to work too hard for only limited ends.
