Re: Is it normal
From experience all I can tell you is that there is no way you understand what it means to be HD and the duties/pressures involved until youíre sitting in the chair. Many HDs, myself included, sometimes miss the days when our only responsibility was to teach kids and someone else took care of all the problems. Think about the thing that bothers you most about youíre work situation, whether thatís an annoying staff member, a particular student, etc; youíre big issues are just minor annoyances to the stuff the HD has to deal with. Also keep in mind that in any company, district, military, etc, that the further up the chain you go, the fewer decisions you make, itís just that the decisions affect more people and have far reaching consequences. Trust me when I say part of the HDs job is to take on a lot of responsibilities so that the staff can focus on teaching students and not be distracted. There are a lot of fires that have to be put out on a weekly basis that the staff will never know about, including parents angry at band staff for who knows what.
