Re: Playing C and Above
Air is important but I tell my students to blow faster air but not harder air. Many times they force and their embouchures cannot set correctly for the notes. Faster does not necessarily mean more. I use far less air on my upper notes but that air is moving much faster. It's really hard to get at first. I've been teaching beginners for almost 30 years and have been through this a lot.
Okay, I could really use some tips from horn players! I have about three players in my beginner class who STRUGGLE with playing trigger C and above. We do lips slurs and mouthpiece work in class daily and talk often about how our aperture should change going higher. We do flow studies/range expansions, and we have worked all the way down to trigger F (they do okay on that)
Are there any specific tips or phrases that you might use to help them? Half of my class plays effortlessly, and the other three just continue to struggle.
