Re: Best Middle School Honor Band tape
I heard Lake Highlands Junior High (actually, they were a "class B" band because they had grades 7-9 then) at an Honor Band concert in the early 70's. Among their program was Music From Prague 1968. It was amazing! I can only imagine what was on their Honor Band submission tape.
I'd never heard this before until just digging around Youtube for recordings, but if this was recorded in May '75 as the video claims, then it would've been what they won with for their 1976 Honor Band appearance.
This is Lake Highlands JHS under the legendary Malcolm Helm playing "Sinfonia No. 4" (Grade 5).
They also did a stellar rendition of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Cappriccio Espagnol" (also a Grade 5) in May of '74 when they weren't eligible....because they had won in '72 as well.
I'd love to hear the Apollo JH recordings from '94-2002 to see how they stack up, considering they won 3 cycles in a row.
Whats y'alls favorite middle school honor band tape that y'all have heard?
