Also, a health issue can guide you to a new career where others are not so dependent upon your presence. Not related to my injury, but once I held a desk job for many years and the thing I loved about it most was that when I needed time off, I didn't need a substitute, didn't have worry about the kids would behave with me gone, and didn't have to be concerned about falling behind with concert/show preparation.
My larger point is that I was able to fully recover over time and get back to a regular schedule, but it took the better part of a year. The other point is that illness/injury is a bit harder in this particular profession. We must remember that it is still just a job, that everyone affected will be okay, and there's no reason for a guilt trip.
