Administration has killed the program through scheduling and ignoring the recruiting efforts of the band program. This past year I found a large number of students who wanted to be in band, yet none were put into my band classes. Students were dumped into class, and when I told students and parents that band instruments were required for a band class, the administration got on to me. The solution was to give the students without access to instruments paperwork. Now, at the semester, I have lost a substantial number of students who were beginners and replaced with brand new students. My advanced band is also spread between all of my classes. My classes now contain advanced band, beginner band (brass, woodwinds, and percussion mixed), and brand new students.
I want to teach, and I am tired of breaking down every day the past years with this situation. I made the mistake of taking just any job, and now I am afraid that the stigma of my district will prevent me from leaving. Advice?
