I did Sparks with a sub non that sounds very much like what you describe. It has been a while, but as I recall the trombones carry a bunch of the weight. I remember the counting in the tuba part being problematic - maybe varying rhythms.
I did "I'll Be Home Before Ya" with it. Nice piece, but be ready to work around C. We did lots of choral and remington work off of C.
I'm highly considering Sparks by Balmages as one of my contest pieces. I have pretty good flutes, trumpets, and low brass. My saxes, horns and clarinets are pretty average. I feel like those groups will come around and perform at a high level by April.
Is this a risky choice?
Second question, can you think of any song that might contrast with Sparks, grade 2 or possibly 3? I'm thinking Blue Ridge Saga, but I may out of my mind! I just want to give my NV Band a challenge.
