Re: Do you play the martyr?
I get to school around 7:00 am each day. I like to get my purposeful work done before the school day starts. Unless we have a game in the evening, I am out the door b 4:30 every day. I have way more important things (family) that likes me to be at home. We are a successful (division 1 sweepstakes) program. I am a firm believer in quality over quantity. I am not going to spend 1 more second at the band hall than I need to. There is no reason. I wake up every morning excited to come and work, and have fun doing it! I would not be in the same mindset if I were staying until 7 or 8 everyday.
I've been in this profession for a while now. I've recently switched districts and I'm astounded by the directors who seem to complain (aka brag) about the hours they are putting in.
They seem to live in the band hall all for "the sake of the kids." These are middle school directors who get to work at 7:30 and stay until 7 or 8.
I get my stuff done and I'm out the door by 5 on most days.
I guess my question is do band directors really see it as a badge of honor that they stay at the band hall all the time and why? What purpose does it serve, especially if the kids already went home hours ago and your program is mediocre or below mediocre at best?
IMHO, if you can't get everything done in a normal amount of time and you aren't making decent ratings, maybe you should reexamine how you do things and where you are putting your energy.
