There was a Texas band legend that used to conduct beginner band with a section of broomstick painted white. Probably equally effective in SR.
Otherwise I really like Guy Lake batons. Even though I do not tap the stand, they are unbreakable - he guarantees.
Go get a dowel rod and cut to the length you want for tapping on the stand for sightreading and save the baton....they can be expensive and it will last longer. I have two from Newland Batons and love them both. Fiberglass shaft and corian handle (different style handles) makes the tip light and they're balanced. He even fix mine when I cracked a piece of the corian off by the shaft.
And one last thing...don't poke your eye out and wear safety glasses when conducting...
I use my baton as a metronome during the sight reading process. Alas, it finally broke.
It's been a long time since I've looked for a new one. I need brand and material suggestions for something sturdy that will put up with my abuse.
Thanks in advance!
