...been there, done that (8th Grade band varsity, then the next year 7th grade NV), got the 1s to prove it. The 7th graders the 2nd year were a stronger group than the previous year's 8th grade, so I put that particular piece in the folder.
And if I interpret it correctly, since varsity and non-varsity are considered separate organizations, a student could technically play one song in NV one year and the same song the next year in the Varsity band.
C&CR rules as written mean that composite programs (8-12) *can* have kids play a piece in 8th grade and then again as seniors.
The C&CR badly needs to be rewritten by a competent attorney - or at least, needs to be fully edited so that it is internally consistent and that rules as written mean what they say and say what they mean. This is just one of many, many oversights (intentional or otherwise) that exist in the rules that people can and do take advantage of.
