Re: Career Change
I started out teaching elementary music and did that for 3 years and then moved to teaching middle school band 7-8 for 16 years. After that I tried teaching in a suburban district that has 5-6 grade band and really enjoyed it. I eventually moved back to teaching at a 6-7-8 middle school for the remainder of my career. In retrospect I kind of wish I had stayed with the 5-6 gig as after two years I started to miss the middle school contests and I wound up finishing my career there in a 6-7-8 middle school. If I had it to do again, I'd definitely go with a 5-6 gig as I never had any after school rehearsals. Although, I did have over 200 students all by myself. But I also found that in retrospect I got more satisfaction from it knowing that I was the one to set the mold for my students in getting them on a good path with the fundamentals they needed to be successful in middle school.
Have you enjoyed the change? Considering elementary, but not sure if I could handle the littlest ones. Not a father yet.
You might consider an Elementary gig possibly helping with beginner band if you want to stay in music teaching...I did.
