Re: Summer Band
Here's hoping you have a great fall. A few thoughts. 1-find the things that are positive and build on those. 2-The things that need to change-try not to dwell on them over and over, just make the change and don't look back. 3-be patient with students to make the adjustments. Even though they want the changes, they will need to learn your "new" ways.
The change is welcomed by all involved. Program is struggling in a REALLY tough Region. We are good, just not at the level of the top tier groups.
IMHO: If this is a successful program, you may want to keep things mostly the same for your first year. Is there an urgent reason to make these changes? Parents and students are already familiar with the old schedule and will likely be making arrangements for non band activities, doctor appointments, etc. based on the old one. No need to "reinvent the wheel" right away. Your students will appreciate returning to that great band without having to deal with change. You will be in a position to say later, "I see some things that we can do to improve" and your students and their parents will be much more open to change.
I am taking over the marching duties (5A school) next year and would like some guidance.
We currently go 7am - 2pm for summer band with a 20-30 minute lunch break.
Mainly we do 2 90 minute sessions outside. Then we spend about 90 minutes in sectionals and 90 minutes in full band with lunch and breaks in between.
For those of you that go longer (let's say 7am-4 pm), what other sessions do you have? We are ok with facilities and staffing is not a huge issue.
