Donít try to make those few like you. Talk to them after class. If that doesnít solve the situation then schedule parent conferences. The goal is to solve the behaviors issues or get them to drop band.
Some will say ďbut the parents donít careĒ and they might be correct. Iíve found the key to dealing with parents that donít care is to waste as much of their time as possible. They will care when you keep pursuing the problem and keep requesting conferences in person. Even ask your principal to attend around the third meeting. . At that point the parent will force the child to submit or they will request a schedule change. Either way you win.
A wise assistant director once told me this in regards to dealing with student discipline. ďAt the end of the period someone is going to be upset....and Iíve decided itís not going to be meĒ.
Itís ok to use time to stomp out problems. Itís not ok to expend emotional pain to yourself for a few ungrateful students.
Then you can focus on the other 345 good students.
